Practicum Activities Reflection:
Over the past two weeks, my preceptor decided that we focus on creating a video on servant leadership, to present at the management meeting to the team leaders. Together with my preceptor, we have looked into the topic of servant leadership which has led to a deeper understanding of the concept, hence the need to share it with the management team. During the presentation, I learned several leadership skills from the team leaders, together with my preceptors such as the need for effective communication, critical thinking, integrity, professional socialization, professionalism, and respect. As we work on our next presentation, I have gained self-confidence, and autonomy, which are key components in promoting advanced leadership role socialization, as demonstrated by my preceptor. I also shadowed the OR Leader in week 9, from the sterile processing department as we looked into issues related to immediate use of steam sterilization of instruments (IUSS). From this experience, I realized the need of involving the whole team in solving issues. Week 9 also focused on mentoring as a leadership aspect, which I learned to appreciate by seeing my preceptor as a leadership mentor. Generally, teamwork, respect, professionalism, and communication are the main competencies that all servant leaders must possess to promote advanced leadership roles (James et al., 2021).
Application of Leadership:
As a leader, I have learned to appreciate the impact of the transformational leadership style in delegating my managerial duties. I believe in motivating people to take ownership of their roles and work beyond limitations. Most of my team members currently understand the benefits of critical thinking rather than doing what they are told. A good leader must possess crucial competencies such as respect, honesty, conflict management, emotional intelligence, and courage among others (James et al., 2021). All of my staff members, also believe in solving problems as a team rather than an individual. For instance, whenever, there are disputes, the nurses involved have gained the courage to report to the head nurse and share their feelings regarding the situation at hand. The head nurse always makes sure that the dispute is only solved when both nurses have reconciled and are happy with the decision made.
With transformational leadership, our department has enjoyed motivational leadership rather than dictatorial. We are always encouraged to perform beyond our expectations, which gives room for new ideas and working together as a group to get things done (Johanson, 2017). Most of the staff members have been motivated to take personal initiative in advancing their nursing skills, which offer more opportunities with greater knowledge. I believe that this leadership style has been beneficial and accepted by all the team members.

Practicum Project Preparation:
The nursing organization from where I am performing my practicum is so strict in observing standards of operations aimed at achieving the organization’s goals and living up to the mission statement. The goals are focused on providing and enhancing supportive and creative educational programs to promote the nursing profession and patients’ safety. Generally, the organization works very hard in broadening the nursing profession, while promoting the quality of care provided. The nurse leaders within the organizations have been assigned the mandate to ensure that staff members benefit maximumly from the educational programs, and display high-quality service provision to promote patients’ safety (James et al., 2021). Through the goals and missions of the organization, I felt like my project focus on servant leadership was very necessary, given that almost all the team leaders in the organization exhibit servant leadership skills. Consequently, I learned that the best way in achieving organizational goals is by promoting personal goals which are linked to the organizational goals and rewarding those who achieve those goals. This is a crucial aspect of servant leadership.
Leadership Video Reflection:
From the “Servant Leadership – Issue of Rule” video, I tend to appreciate the modern leadership concept, which depicts managers as enablers rather than controllers. The leader in this case does not rule by telling people what to do, but rather tries to motivate team members to achieve their fullest potential. The team does not necessarily serve the leader, but instead, it is the leader who serves the team (Best, 2020). The second lesson that can be drawn from the video is the issues associated with authority and mastery. In as much as servant leaders are advised to “lead from behind”, it is very crucial that they do not fail to establish their authority and mastery. All organizations are fond of servant leaders, but would also want those leaders who are highly competent in their own rights, with control, power, authority, and ability to influence in all directions.
