Transcultural approach to familial healthcare
This concept refers to the knowledge system for nursing practices, which provide care services to the family system unit from the cultural perspective. Care providers working in a multicultural society should interact with family systems from various cultural backgrounds and linguistic factors. For this reason, culturally-competent nurses should be experienced in dealing with diverse ethnic groups (Mixer et al., 2015). Additionally, these care providers should be interested in continuous learning to improve their communication and cultural assessment skills.
The effectiveness of the transcultural nursing approach to familial healthcare
I feel that this approach is the most effective care delivery model. In this approach, nurses consider a particular family system’s cultural beliefs and traditions to provide care services based on their cultural practices and language. A better rapport is established between a patient and a cultural-competent nurse (Jongen et al., 2018). A good rapport enhances the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the patient. Additionally, improved communication between the clinician and the patient supports the assessment of patient needs and the development of the most appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
The differences between this approach and individual healthcare
The transcultural nursing approach to familial healthcare differs from individual healthcare. The transcultural nursing approach to familial healthcare considers multiple cultural aspects such as traditions, beliefs, values, and practices when providing care services to a family unit (Karabudak et al., 2013). On the other hand, individual healthcare focuses on the care needs of individual patients.
The essential components of the role of the nurse in transcultural health nursing for prenatal through adolescent care
The essential components of the nurse’s role in transcultural health nursing for prenatal through adolescent care involve educating adolescents on how they should behave during pregnancy depending on their cultural beliefs and values. For instance, adolescents can be educated about the tasks and behaviors that they should avoid during pregnancy, depending on their cultural states regarding expectant mothers’ behaviors and responsibilities. Therefore, a nurse should understand cultural beliefs and traditions about the pregnancy of a particular ethnic group to provide prenatal care through adolescent care.
Do you practice using a transcultural approach to familial care? If yes, how? If no, how can you do so? Give specific examples.
I incorporate a transcultural approach to familial care into my nursing practice. I work in a nursing home based in Louisville. Sometimes I am required to attend to Mexican patient who has different cultural beliefs and family values. Understanding these values enhances the provision of care services to this patient. For instance, I establish a good rapport with the client when he notices I understand and respect his cultural values and beliefs. A good rapport facilitates the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of this patient. Additionally, understanding the client’s language enhances communication during the patient’s assessment and diagnosis. Consequently, the most appropriate treatment plan is developed for this client based on assessment results.
